Role in Reading

Concern: The lack of an updated AASL position statement on the library media specialist's role in teaching reading strategies and promoting reading.

Action: Both the Affiliate Executive Committee and the Affiliate Assembly body passed this concern. The AASL Board of Directors responded with the creation of the Library Media Specialist's Role in Reading Task Force charged with:

1. creating a position statement that defines the library media specialists’ role in both teaching reading comprehension strategies and engaging students in pleasure and recreational reading
2. developing a toolkit to aid in this role.

Concern: Information Power 2 needs to reflect the changing role of technology and the impact on school librarians' roles as instructional specialists and their traditional role in reading.

Action: The Affiliate Executive Committee did not approve this concern for submission to the Affiliate Assembly body.
